Some young students (aged 14-18) are free in the evenings or have days off at school, which way can bring them the most benefits?

  A. to accumulate work experience by a part time job or volunteering in a community

  B. learning to play a sport

  C. learning to play a musical instrument

Usually, students fill their free time with varied activities: taking on a part time job or volunteering in a community, learning to play a sport, learning to play a musical instrument and so on. However, it still remains a controversial issue which way brings them the most benefits. From my point of view, the most significant benefits are gained from learning to play a sport. The bases of my view are social, professional and physiological.

Socially, students learn to appreciate the spirit of teamwork in sports. As is known, the division of labour in society increases and the specialization(专门化)of labour makes it difficult for one single person to complete a complex task. According to a study, in the past 20 years, team winners account for(占据) 82% of Nobel Laureates(诺贝尔奖)。 Therefore, in order to better suit themselves to society, it is necessary for students to realize the significance of cooperation. Certainly, no one would deny that the spirit of cooperation manifest itself best in sports, especially in group games like football, basketball, baseball and so on. Thus, to learn to play a sport definitely drives home the meaning of teamwork.

From a professional perspective, sport learning prepares students for success in the future career. In a sport, everyone does their utmost to win, keeping fighting in spite of exhaustion(精疲力尽)。 This undoubtedly helps to develop a most important personality trait known as grit(勇气和毅力)。 Why is grit so relevant to professional success? The answer to this question lies in(在于)the study conducted by an American economist and professor named Alan Krueger. He revealed that what determines the future success of students is not that they have gone to prestigious (有声望的)universities like those in the Ivy League(长春藤联盟), but that they must have grit as a shared virtue(美德)。 Without it, nothing big could be achieved.

Physiologically speaking, playing sports is an effective way for students to relieve stress(缓解压力)。 Middle school students suffer from the intensely heavy load of study. They are faced with more subjects than younger students in primary schools, buried in all the assignments their teachers require and even pressed for sleeping time. All of this builds up their need for an outlet(出口)for great pressure. Surely, practicing a sport has proven a great choice. This is because in the process of sports, the human brain produces a chemical substance termed endorphin(内啡肽), which effectively alleviates(减轻)the effects of stress. Common evidence for endorphin’s magic is that it contributes to the “runner’s high”。 So, by playing a sport, one’s mood improves and the stress dies away.

In conclusion, to learn to play a sport emphasizes the spirit of cooperation, equips students with(配备) grit and offers them a form of relaxation. Therefore, I firmly believe that students benefit most if they turn to sports for their spare time.
